STANDARD LESSONS

From the first lesson through to test day, StreetSafe supports learners with clear goals, regular progress checks, practical feedback after every lesson and guidance on securing a practical driving test date when they are ready. Where required, parents can also be kept informed, so everyone understands how the learner is progressing and what comes next.

STANDARD DRIVING LESSON SCHEDULE

STEP 1

1. iNITIAL ENQUIRY AND BOOK

WHAT HAPPENS:

The student or parent contacts StreetSafe to discuss lesson availability, experience level and goals.

wE CONFIRM:

  • If you have a test date, if not we will support you with the application.
  • Whether the student is a complete beginner or has previous driving experience.
  • Preferred lesson times and location.
  • Any nerves, confidence concerns or additional support needs.
  • Whether parents would like progress feedback after lessons.
  • Whether the student has passed their theory test.
  • Whether the student already has a practical test booked.

OUTCOME:

The student is matched with a suitable instructor and booked onto their first lesson.

STEP 2

2. FIRST LESSON: INTRODUCTION AND ASSESSMENT

LESSON FOCUS:

The first lesson is calm, supportive and focused on understanding the student’s starting point.

wHAT IS COVERED:

  • Meeting the instructor and explaining how lessons work.
  • Safety briefing and basic car controls.
  • Cockpit drill.
  • Mirrors, seat position and controls.
  • Moving off and stopping if suitable.
  • Initial assessment of confidence, awareness and ability.
  • Discussion around theory test status and future practical test planning.

FEEDBACK AFTER LESSON:

The instructor provides a short summary covering:

  • What went well.
  • Areas to develop.
  • Recommended lesson frequency.
  • Suggested next steps.
  • An early view on the learner’s likely route towards test readiness.

Parent feedback can also be provided if requested.

STEP 3

3. EARLY LESSONS: BUILDING CONTROL AND CONFIDENCE

TYPICAL FOCUS:

These lessons help the student become comfortable controlling the car safely.

TOPICS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Moving off and stopping safely.
  • Steering control.
  • Clutch control or automatic car control.
  • Gear changes where relevant.
  • Mirrors and blind spots.
  • Basic junctions.
  • Road positioning.
  • Speed control.
  • Developing confidence on quieter roads.

FEEDBACK AFTER eACH LESSON:

Students receive clear feedback on:

  • Skills covered.
  • Progress made.
  • Any repeated errors.
  • What to focus on before the next lesson.
  • Focus for the next session.

Where required, parents can also receive a brief progress update.

STEP 4

4. DEVELOPING ROAD SKILLS

TYPICAL FOCUS:

Once basic control improves, lessons move into more varied road situations.

TOPICS MAY INCLUDE:

  • T-junctions.
  • Crossroads.
  • Roundabouts.
  • Meeting traffic.
  • Pedestrian crossings.
  • Traffic lights.
  • Lane discipline.
  • Busier town driving.
  • Independent decision-making.
  • Hazard awareness.

FEEDBACK AFTER EACH LESSON:

The instructor gives practical feedback to help the student understand not only what to do, but why it matters for safety.

Where requested, parents can receive a brief update on:

  • Confidence level.
  • Safety awareness.
  • Areas needing more practice.
  • Overall progress towards test readiness.

STEP 5

5. PRACTICAL TEST PLANNING AND SUPPORT

When the learner is progressing well, StreetSafe will support them with planning for their practical driving test.

THIS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Discussing when the student is likely to be ready.
  • Checking whether the theory test has been passed.
  • Advising when it is sensible to start looking for a practical test date.
  • Helping the learner understand how the booking process works.
  • Supporting the learner in finding a suitable test date where possible.
  • Working lesson planning backwards from the confirmed test date.
  • Making sure the student has enough time to prepare properly before test day.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

StreetSafe supports learners with the practical test booking process, but test availability is controlled by the DVSA and cannot be guaranteed. We will always advise students honestly on whether they are ready and whether a booked test date is realistic.

STEP 6

6. MANOEUVRES AND TEST SKILLS

TYPICAL FOCUS:

Students learn and practise the key manoeuvres required for the driving test.

MANOEUVRES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Pulling up on the right and reversing.
  • Bay parking.
  • Parallel parking.
  • Forward bay parking.
  • Emergency stop where appropriate.
  • Controlled reversing and observation.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS COVERED:

  • Following sat nav directions.
  • Independent driving.
  • Safe judgement.
  • Planning ahead.
  • Responding to other road users.

FEEDBACK AFTER EACH LESSON:

Students are told which manoeuvres are improving, which need more work and how close they are to test standard.

STEP 7

7. TEST PREPARATION LESSONS

TYPICAL FOCUS:

As the student becomes more confident, lessons become more test-focused while still prioritising safe driving.

TOPICS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Driving test routes where appropriate.
  • Independent driving practice.
  • Common test faults.
  • Show me / tell me questions.
  • Managing nerves.
  • Improving judgement under pressure.
  • Building consistency.
  • Reviewing progress against the confirmed or target test date.

FEEDBACK AFTER EACH LESSON:

The instructor provides honest feedback on whether the student is moving towards test readiness and what needs to improve before taking the test.

STEP 8

8. MOCK TEST

PURPOSE:

A mock test gives the student a realistic idea of what the practical driving test will feel like.

WHAT IT INCLUDES:

  • Test-style driving conditions.
  • Independent driving.
  • Manoeuvre assessment.
  • Fault identification.
  • Clear pass/fail-style feedback.
  • Action plan before the real test.

FEEDBACK AFTER MOCK TEST:

The student receives a structured review covering:

  • Strengths.
  • Serious or repeated faults.
  • Confidence and decision-making.
  • Final areas to focus on.
  • Whether they are ready for the real test.

Parent feedback can also be provided if requested.

STEP 9

9. FINAL LESSONS BEFORE TEST

TYPICAL FOCUS:

These lessons are used to polish skills and build confidence before test day.

MAY INCLUDE:

  • Revisiting weaker areas.
  • Practising test routes where appropriate.
  • Strengthening manoeuvres.
  • Reducing hesitation.
  • Improving planning and awareness.
  • Building calm test-day confidence.
  • Making sure the student is prepared for the timing, format and expectations of the practical test.

FEEDBACK AFTER eACH LESSON:

The instructor gives clear guidance on final improvements and helps the student feel prepared, focused and realistic.

STEP 10

10. TEST DAY SUPPORT

WHERE ARRANGED, STREETSAFE CAN PROVIDE:

  • Pre-test warm-up lesson.
  • Use of the instructor’s car for the test.
  • Final confidence-building guidance.
  • Support before and after the test.

AFTER THE TEST:

Whether the student passes or fails, the instructor provides feedback and next steps.

If the student does not pass first time, StreetSafe will review the test result, explain the examiner’s feedback, identify the areas to improve and help plan the next stage, including support with looking for a new test date where possible.

FEEDBACK AFTER EVERY LESSON

At StreetSafe, feedback is part of the learning process. After each lesson, the student receives clear, supportive and practical feedback so they know exactly how they are progressing.

  • What was covered in the lesson.
  • What the student did well.
  • What needs improvement.
  • Safety awareness and confidence level.
  • Progress against test standard.
  • Recommended focus for the next lesson.
  • Whether the learner is on track for their target or booked test date.

PARENT FEEDBACK

For younger learners or where requested, StreetSafe can also provide feedback to parents after lessons. This helps parents understand the learner’s progress, confidence and readiness, while giving reassurance that the student is developing safe driving habits.
