Practical driving test preparation

Being test-ready is about more than learning manoeuvres or memorising road signs. A test-ready learner should be able to drive safely and independently, without constant help from their instructor.

You may be ready for your practical driving test when you can:

  • drive without regular prompts from your instructor
  • make safe decisions independently
  • deal with roundabouts, junctions and different road types
  • complete manoeuvres confidently
  • respond safely to other road users
  • understand road signs, markings and speed limits
  • stay calm when something unexpected happens
  • complete a mock driving test to a safe standard

The DVSA’s Ready to Pass campaign encourages learners to make sure they are properly prepared before taking the practical driving test, rather than rushing into it too early.

What happens on driving test day?

Driving test day can feel like a big moment, but it is easier when you know what to expect.

On the day of your practical driving test, you should bring:

  • your UK driving licence
  • your theory test pass certificate, if you have it
  • a suitable car for the test, usually your instructor’s car
  • glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving

GOV.UK says you do not need to get a replacement theory test certificate if you have lost it, as the examiner can check that you have passed before the test starts.

During the driving test, you can expect:

  • an eyesight check
  • “show me, tell me” vehicle safety questions
  • general road driving
  • independent driving
  • one reversing manoeuvre
  • possibly an emergency stop

GOV.UK explains that the practical driving test includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving ability including independent driving, and reversing your vehicle. The standard car test usually involves around 35 minutes of driving.
