Help Getting a Driving Test Date: How to Book Your Practical Driving Test

Getting a driving test date can feel like a job in itself. For many learners, it is one of the most frustrating parts of learning to drive.

One of the most common questions we hear at StreetSafe Driving School is:

How do I get a driving test date?

The answer is simple in one sense, but it needs a bit of patience. The safest place to book your practical driving test is through the official GOV.UK driving test booking service. A standard car practical driving test costs £62 on weekdays or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays when booked officially. GOV.UK also warns that unofficial websites usually charge more.

StreetSafe advice for getting a driving test date

There is no magic shortcut, but there are sensible steps that can improve your chances of getting a suitable test date.

  1. Pass your theory test first
In most cases, you need a valid theory test pass before booking your practical driving test. It is worth getting this done early, so you are not ready to drive but stuck waiting to book.
  2. Use the official GOV.UK website
Avoid overpriced third-party booking websites. Some may look official, but the safest route is to book directly through GOV.UK.
From 12 May 2026, GOV.UK says learner drivers must book and manage their own car driving test. Your driving instructor is not allowed to book, change, swap or cancel it for you.
  3. Check regularly for cancellations
Driving test dates can appear when other learners cancel or move their booking. It is worth checking regularly, but do it calmly. Refreshing the page all day is not a driving plan.
  4. Be flexible with test centres
If your preferred test centre has no availability, nearby centres may have earlier dates. That said, choose carefully. From 9 June 2026, learners can only move their test to nearby centres, including one of the 3 nearest centres to where the test is booked.
  5. Do not book too early if you are not ready
A test date is only useful if you are prepared. Rushing into a driving test before you are ready can waste money and dent your confidence.
There is a bit of life experience in this: timing matters. Being keen is good, but being ready is better.
  6. Speak to your StreetSafe instructor
Your instructor can help you understand whether you are test-ready and plan your driving lessons around your target test date.
A good instructor will not just tell you what you want to hear. They will help you judge your driving honestly, work on the weaker areas and prepare properly for the roads you are likely to face on test day.

Important driving test booking changes in 2026

DVSA has introduced changes to how car driving test bookings are managed in 2026.

The key changes are:

  • Since 31 March 2026, learners can only make 2 changes to their driving test booking.
  • Since 12 May 2026, only the learner driver can book and manage their own test.
  • From 9 June 2026, learners can only move their test to nearby test centres.

These changes are designed to make the booking system fairer and reduce misuse of test slots.
